The term REALTOR® is a registered trademark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics and Standard of Practice. Real estate professionals who are not members of the National Association of REALTORS® cannot use the term REALTOR®.
In Vermont, you must be at least 18 years of age to become a REALTOR®. Here are 5 steps to becoming a REALTOR®.
Complete a 40-hour salesperson pre-licensing course. Visit the education pages of this website for a listing of available classes.
Upon successful completion of the 40-hour salesperson pre-licensing course, you must take the Vermont state licensing exam. For information about the state exam, contact the Vermont Real Estate Commission at (802) 828-3228 or visit their website here.
Join a local Board of REALTORS®. You can find your local board by clicking on the map on the right hand side of this page. When you join your local board, you automatically become a member of the Vermont Association of REALTORS® and the National Association of REALTORS®.
Complete the Code of Ethics training withing 180 days of your local board application date. Code of Ethics training can be taken in a classroom, or online. Many local boards offer Code of Ethics training. For a list of VAR's classes, visit our education pages here.

Attend a new member orientation class. You are required to attend one of the first two orientation classes offered once you have completed your REALTOR® application process. This is a one-day class.
